WHAT IS HOT YOGA?
The Hot Yoga sequence is a style of hatha yoga that originated from a lineage in Calcutta, India. It finds
its roots
in the tradition of Bishnu Ghosh, the innovator in Hot Yoga and Bikram Chourdhury, who brought
this style of yoga
to the United States. Bikram Choudury opened the first Bikram Yoga studio in San
Francisco, 1973.
The Hot Yoga sequence is a challenging series of 28 postures (asanas) and 2 breathing exercises
(pranayamas)
practiced in a heated room, suitable for all ages and ability levels. The postures stretch and
strengthen specific
muscles, ligaments and joints needed for the next posture.
Heat warms the muscles, prevents injuries, and increases circulation to facilitate the body’s natural
ability
to
heal.
Heat cleanses the body by flushing toxins and allowing a deeper workout.
It is directed at creating the highest level of energy, vitality, and freedom. It cultivates the body’s
capacity
to relax
and dramatically reduces the negative effects of stress.
Hot Yoga is a form of preventative medicine and the benefits of the practice are immediate.
